A WORKMANLIKE performance saw Old Halesonians RFC continue their cllimb up the table with a 29-5 win over Burton.
The Wassell Grove side are now up to second in Midlands One West, as they followed up the previous week’s superb victory at Lichfield with a solid home win.
Appalling weather conditions meant the game was always going to be a grind and Hales set out their stall early, a driving maul leading to a try for flanker Tom Jordan.
The pressure was maintained with a breakaway try by the mercurial Luke Smith for a 10-0 lead.
Burton simply could not deal with the onslaught and a series of scrums near the visitors’ line resulted in a penalty try being awarded. Dave Hadkiss converted to give the hosts a 17-0 lead at the break.
Jordan grabbed his second score of the day early in the second period following a lineout catch and drive, before Burton pulled a try back with their first points of the game.
Both teams continued to produce good rugby despite the conditions and Smith capped a fine display with his second try late on.
Old Halesonians visit Newport next week in the North Midlands Cup.
An excellent first half performance saw the seconds breeze past Dudley Kingswinford Wasps 48-7.
The first three tries were scored by Matt Weaver, Alex Church and Seb Rose and were all as a result of tremendous interplay between forwards and backs. Adam Whiteman converted two of the scores.
Pete Lewis then got in on the act, scoring two converted tries in quick succession. There was still time for Dan Levenue to get on the scoresheet before DK pulled one back to make the half-time score 38-7.
The worsening conditions got the better of both sides during the second period but Hales still scored twice more through Greg Smith and James Sadler.
Craig Jukes scored a hat-trick of tries in the third XV’s 59-7 win over DK Scorpions, while there were also tries for Jamie Leach, Dan Pardoe, Luke Irwin, Carl Davis, Ben Roberts and Steve Deakin.
Jason Lowe got two tries in the Veterans 36-12 win over Warley. The Colts defeated Stourbridge 18-10 thanks to scores from Jack Linehan and Harry Higgs.
