NOVICE runner Stephen Barker, from Halesowen, pushed himself through the pain barrier to complete the London marathon in 5hrs 18mins.

The 31-year-old train controller with Virgin Trains had vowed to take part along with thousands of others in defiance of the bombers that caused death and carnage at the Boston Marathon days earlier.

“The first 18 miles were fine, then my legs started to go and I walked to mile 22. Then I thought I just had to finish so I pelted the last four miles,” he said, pushed on by friends and workmates.

Mr Barker, of Long Lane, who has raised more then £1,800, including gift aid, for the Terrence Higgins Trust, added: I did enjoy it - but never again.”
