MUSIC-LOVERS wanting to get a taste of Memphis can see a multi-award winning musical in London.

Inspired by true events from the underground dance clubs of 1950s Memphis, Tennessee, the musical follows the fame and forbidden love of a radio DJ who wants to change the world and a club singer who is ready for her big break.

Wolverhampton starlet Beverley Knight leads an all star cast in the Tony award winning musical at the Shaftesbury Theatre.

And the tourist board in Memphis is hoping the musical will bring even more UK tourists to the city.

The Memphis Convention and Visitors Bureau already has a London-based office and has been marketing the city as a tourist destination for more than 20 years.

As well as Graceland Memphis offers a host of attractions for tourists.

Several social media promo videos have been made featuring lead actress Beverly Knight visiting Memphis and experiencing city landmarks including Beale Street, the National Civil Rights Museum, Stax Museum of American Soul Music, Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum and Willie Mitchell’s Royal Studios.

Knight was joined by Daniel Bryan, Bon Jovi co-founder who wrote all the original music for Memphis. The two performed together with the Stax Music Academy and recorded with Lawrence “Boo” Mitchell at Royal Studios.

Memphis is based on Dewey Phillips, who broadcast Elvis Presley’s first hit, That’s All Right, on his Red, Hot & Blue radio show on WHBQ located in Hotel Chisca.

The musical recently completed a Broadway run and 55-city North American tour. For more information about Memphis visit www.memphisthemusical.com.
