UNDER-FIRE deputy leader of Sandwell Council Councillor Mahboob Hussain has resigned his cabinet position.

After months of withstanding pressure the Oldbury councillor, who has been the subject of a police investigation since September concerning land sales, has bit the bullet tonight.

Cabinet member for regeneration Councillor Ian Jones, cabinet member for jobs and the economy, has resigned as well.

A council source said: "They have both resigned so they can clear their name concerning accusations of improper land sales, eg public toilets."

Both are believed to have voluntarily suspended themselves from the Labour Party.
