A Halesowen sports club has set an example to others across the borough by hitting smoking for six.

Halesowen Cricket Club have decided to make its social club smoke free for the new season, in a move which comes months before new legislation comes into force.

The decision was taken after the social club was redecorated during the close season, and the club say they have already received positive comments from customers and staff.

From July 1 all enclosed public places and workplaces must become smoke free, with people who do not comply with the law liable to a fixed penalty notice or prosecution.

Ruth Olding, Smokefree implementation officer at Dudley Council, said: "The new legislation will come into force in the next couple of months and people need to be ready for it.

"Halesowen Cricket Club has set an excellent example and I'm pleased to see it has gone down so well."
