There are now only a few weeks to go until July 1 and Sandwell landlords are being urged to get their no smoking' signs in all communal blocks of flats, halls of residence and sheltered accommodation.
Under new rules designed to protect employees and the public from the effects of secondhand smoke, virtually all public places and workplaces will become smokefree.
Principal environmental health officer Shane Middleton said: "Landlords and people responsible for houses in multiple occupation will be required to erect signs and ensure residents, visitors and contractors do not smoke in communal areas such as entrance halls, stairwells, lifts and in shared kitchens, bathrooms or laundry rooms."
After July 1 it will be a criminal offence to smoke in enclosed public places and any individuals could be fined a £50 fixed penalty notice for lighting up in a non-smoking building or vehicle.
The manager of any enclosed premises or work vehicle could be fined a £200 fixed penalty notice for failing to display the correct signage and could also be prosecuted, with fines of up to £2,500 for allowing a person to smoke.
