Halesowen residents are being warned about a company which is illegally offering to install dropped kerbs outside homes.
The company, which operates under the name of New Lay Drives, has been dropping leaflets through doors in Leebank Road, Hasbury.
The company is claiming legislation has recently changed to allow private companies to undertake such work.
But transport bosses at Dudley Council are urging residents not to have work carried out as private companies are not permitted to carry out it out.
Councillor Angus Adams, cabinet member for transportation, said: "We urge residents not to have any work carried out by this company.
"Residents who require such works should contact the council which can give permission for them and provide a written estimate.
"Any work undertaken by this company is liable to be taken up by the council and the footway repaired to our specification.
"The cost of which will be forwarded to the relevant householders."
The installation of vehicle crossings and works completed on the highway are regulated by the Highways Act 1980 and the New Road and Street Works Act 1991.
Under this legislation private companies cannot undertake work on the highway without the permission of the highway authority.
