DEPUTY Mayor Hilary Bills has praised Halesowen people young and old for making the town’s Remembrance Day one of the best-attended ever.
Thousands of people packed the streets of Halesowen town centre on Sunday, November 11, to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives while serving their country.
This year’s Remembrance Day celebrations were particularly poignant as they marked the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I.
Organisations such as the Cubs, Scouts, Guides and Beavers plus youngsters from Halesowen College joined members of the British Legion and marching bands in the parade around the town.
And Mrs Bills – a Halesowen North councillor and Deputy Mayor of Dudley Council, on whose behalf she laid a wreath at the War Memorial at St John’s Church – said it was a memorable and emotional day.
Mrs Bills added: “I have never seen so many people surround the War Memorial, they were all along the back wall. Then everybody packed into the church afterwards.
“The fact that the community came together meant a lot and people were impressed by the conduct and behaviour of the young people present.”
