A COUPLE who grew up together in Rowley Regis were delighted to receive a card from King Charles and Camilla to mark their diamond wedding anniversary.
Daniel and Mary Russell celebrated 60 years of marriage on February 9.
Mr Russell, aged 82, was childhood friends with Mrs Russell, aged 81. They first met when he moved from Scotland to Rowley Regis at the age of nine.
They both lived on Newhall Road and often played cricket and knock door run together as children.
Mr Russell, who previously worked as a plasterer, watched her walk home once and he thought to himself "that's the girl I want to marry."
Mrs Russell, who used to work as a sewing machinist for Marks and Spencer, remembers being treated to fish and chips and a trip to the cinema.
The two were married in Blackheath in 1963. Mr Russell said: "I had my wedding ring on my finger in 1963 and it's never been off to this day.
"Every day in 60 odd years is a great memory that's the way I think of it".
Mrs Russell said: "We love each other dearly".
The couple have twin daughters and four grandchildren.
They moved from the Black Country to Stourport and have lived in Wyre Forest for 50 years.
Mr Russell is a Stourport Town Councillor and was mayor of the town from 2021 to 2022.
He said one of the secrets to their long marriage is never going to sleep on an argument, with Mrs Russell saying honesty is important.
They were both excited to receive a congratulatory card from the King.
The letter read: "My wife and I were so pleased to hear that you are celebrating your Diamond Wedding anniversary on 9th February, 2023. This brings you our warmest congratulations and heartfelt good wishes on this happy occasion".
Mrs Russell added: "It was absolutely wonderful. He's a wonderful man and he'll make a good king".
They also celebrated their huge milestone with a family meal.
