THE tables have turned and a former Halesowen restaurateur is now cooking for his son in a new takeaway.
Kayum Ali used to run Spice Fusion on Long Lane and won multiple awards for his Indian/Bangla food during the 12 years he was proprietor.
After deciding to sell up and move abroad for a while his son Kamran decided to follow in his footsteps and has opened Spice Hut takeaway on the same road in Shell Corner.
Now father Kayum, aged 54, is working for his 25-year-old son, who has converted the unit which used to be a Caribbean takeaway.
Kayum said: "I won numerous awards over the years at Spice Fusion and was congratulated by Michelin star chefs Atul Kochhar, Dominic Chapman and Rupert Rowley, but after 12 years of trading I decided to sell up and go to Bangladesh for a bit.
"Then almost a year later Kamran phoned me and said he had followed in my footsteps and bought a shop further down on Long Lane and started a takeaway business.
"He had kept it quiet until he had finished the work in there so that he could surprise me.
"I am really proud of him - I came and had the honour of opening the takeaway - the tables have turned now I'm a chef for him and he's my boss.
"I am proud that he's kept the legacy going in the family."
Kamran said he was enjoying learning about cooking from his father.
He said: "I've been working with my dad since I was 14 and would go and help him after school by doing waiting.
"It's great to be able to get into the kitchen with him and learn from him."
Spice Hut is open Fridays and Saturdays from 5pm to 11pm and from 5pm to 10pm on all other days.
