A HALESOWEN supermarket looks set to be flattened to make way for a larger store.

Lidl has unveiled plans to demolish its supermarket on Hagley Road and build a new 1,977 sq. m store in its place.

The discount retailer has applied to Dudley Council for a "screening opinion" to see whether an Environmental Impact Assessment would be needed before a formal planning application is submitted.

Planners said it would not be needed.

A report states: "The construction and subsequent operation of the proposed development is not deemed to have any significant impacts on ecological considerations within the surrounding area that would need to be considered as part of an EIA.

"The nearest ecological designation relates to Highfield Park Potential Site of Importance (PSI) located approximately 100m northwest of the development and there are no watercourses within close proximity to the development."

They go on to say: "It is not anticipated that the proposed development would generate an adverse impact socially, economically, culturally or environmentally at more than a local level that could not be mitigated for through the planning process."

Notes from Dudley Council's Environmental safety and health team state that they are concerned about potential noise affecting local residents.

A report states: "I would take this opportunity to raise potential noise concerns with the redevelopment and significant extension of the food store, given the close proximity of residential receptors.

"The applicant must ensure that a Noise Impact Assessment is undertaken to ensure the development would not adversely affect the amenities of nearby residents, with particular regard to the location of external plant and delivery areas."
