A Halesowen employee is celebrating a ‘Golden’ anniversary as he clocks up half a century of loyal service at Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care.
Luke Warrican, who is quality control supervisor at the company’s lens manufacturer, Mersona Ltd on Coombs Road, Halesowen, has reached his milestone having started as a 19-year-old apprentice fitting lenses to spectacle frames.
He has steadily moved up the management ladder and reflects that being made a ‘leading hand’ 30 years ago was his proudest career moment.
Fifty years ago, Scrivens was a Midlands-focused business with just 40 branches, today the company has grown to 168 stores nationwide offering both high street optical and hearing care.
Luke said he is grateful to Scrivens for its support to him over the years and cites that as key to his longevity at the company.
He said: “I was newly-married when I joined Scrivens and soon became a father, so I was driven to do the best I could and provide for my growing family.
"Fast forward a few years and my three children were still young when my late wife became ill and I needed flexible working to look after everyone.
"I have never forgotten the help I was given when I needed it most, which is why I have stayed loyal to the company for so long.”
Today, Luke has seven grandchildren and is still enjoying working with no immediate plans to retire.
Scrivens chairman, Nicholas Georgevic, said: “To reach 50 years’ service is an incredible milestone.
"Luke is one of three employees who have reached this amazing milestone this summer. They are all highly valued members of the Scrivens’ team and have contributed so much to our success. We look forward to benefitting from Luke’s continued wisdom and professionalism.
“We have many other colleagues who have reached 25, 30 and 40 years with us and I am super proud that these people choose to work for us year after year.”
Family business Scrivens Opticians & Hearing Care was established in 1938 and has 168 branches.
