THE CHRISTMAS light switch on event in West Bromwich has been cancelled due to fears over weather conditions that have been forecast for tomorrow.

The West Bromwich Business Improvement District (BID) took to social media to announce they have been forced to cancel the switch on after Storm Bert is expected to hit parts of the West Midlands on Saturday, November 23.

The BID said: “Storm Bert is against us unfortunately and the safety of staff and public come first.

“As you can imagine everyone at The BID are very disappointed and all the hard work that has been put into making this a successful event each year.

“We can only apologise but it's completely out of our control.”

They also confirmed that the light switch, which was due to take place on the High Street, will not be re-scheduled for an alternative date.

Iconic 90s R&B boyband Damage were supposed to be switching on the lights and doing a live performance.

There was also supposed to be performances from Back2Back dance, Matilda Pratt, Sandwell College Performing art students, Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Dennis Lloyd and Smile Musical Youth.

Storm Bert is expected to bring high winds and potential flooding as it hits the UK on Saturday, according to the Met Office.

As of now, the West Midlands has not been issued a specific weather warning, but the Met Office have warned strong winds will be “felt by all”.

The UK Health Security Agency (HSA) has also issued an amber cold health alert for the West Midlands that will be in place until 6.00pm on Saturday, meaning there is “significant” risk to vulnerable people due to the weather.

Sandwell Council have confirmed that the scheduled Christmas light switch on events in Bearwood and Blackheath for tonight, November 22, will still be going ahead as planned.
