This remake of the 1951 sci-fi classic The Day the Earth Stood Still is a disappointing film which makes you wonder why director Scott Derrickson bothered to make it at all.
Starring Keanu Reeves as an alien called Klaatu who has come to warn the human race it is destroying planet Earth the film is dull and lacking in imagination.
There are lots of dramatic special effects - we see Klaatu coming to earth in a swirling orb of light and whole cities being destroyed - but let's face it we have seen this sort of stuff before many times and it can't make up for a boring script and gaping holes in the story.
Jennifer Connelly stars as a college professor in astrobiology whose skills are called upon to try to combat an object screaming towards planet earth.
One minute Reeve's alien is set upon exterminating the human race to save the earth - while the next - apparently simply because he sees Connelly hugging her adopted ten-year-old son played by Jaden Smith - he's changed his mind and wants to save mankind.
My advice is give this bland film a miss.
