At the July club evening our 'Bride and Groom' Pauline & Wes Holloway were presented with a photo album and large framed photo for their participation in the June evening of Weddings Designs.
Speaker Bruce Screen from Cypress Nursery, Powke Lane, Blackheath informed us of the history of the nursery and how his mother, Monica Bennett, first grew vegetables and flowers – specialising in onions and chrysanthemums – and she was the first woman national judge in the country of chrysanthemums.
Monica then became interested in growing geraniums and she named varieties after her family and many famous people, a few being.
Many famous people have visited the nursery over the years.
Monica wrote for gardening magazines, newspapers and has also written books, one which Bruce had on sale was A Woman in a Man's World. Monica was a worldwide horticulturalist and known especially for growing geraniums. Last year a commemoration garden was created in Blackheath, at the top of the High Street for what Monica had achieved in her lifetime. Bruce ended with a question and answer time and with the sale of plants. There is no club evening in August but there is a club outing on Saturday August 7 to Llandaff Cathedral at which NAFAS is celebrating its 50th Anniversary. The coach leaves the Baptist Car Park at 9 am.
The next club evening will be on Thursday September 2 when Sue Somers, Secretary of Oldbury Flower Club will be doing a Harvest Flower Demonstration. Venue: The Four Ways Baptist Church, Corngreaves Road, Cradley Heath, B64 6BL. Doors Open: 6.45 pm for 7.30 pm. Cost: £3 to include coffee/tea/biscuits. All welcome. Contact No. 0121 550 3331.
