The July club night was very enjoyable, with Lorena Dyer's demonstration “Memories are made of this”.
Before Lorena entertained us Mrs Celia Wilkie gave relevant club notices and forthcoming NAFAS events.
Beryl and Sheila were thanked for arranging the trip to Hampton Court and Broadfield vineyards which everyone had enjoyed.
Cynthia Slade and Wendy Sloper were joint winners of competition ‘Sea breeze’.
She then gave a warm welcome to Lorena Dyer (Coventry) who had visited the club on three previous occasions. Her demonstration was based upon memories she has of events, people and sayings.
A visit to Chelsea Flower Show was suggested by an arrangement in greens and pink (peonies) in a large black/silver flat circular pot which could be the shape of a medal won at Chelsea or the memory of an old penny piece.
Memories of a much-loved grandmother was portrayed by a lovely all-round design in lilacs and pinks (stocks, phlox, roses etc ) on top of a large glass container similar in shape to an oil-lamp globe, which was round and plump.
Pieces of mesh were inserted to represent knitting which was a hobby of hers. We all felt we knew grandma as this display was created .
The next exhibit involved audience participation – it was based on old remembered sayings which members were invited to share with everyone. Lorena's choice was ‘Blue and green should never be seen’ Agapanthus (blue) and Anastasia chrysanths and anthuriums (green) formed the basis of this design, which was created in the modern manner in a tall cylindrical container. Bent steel-grass added another modern touch.
Cricket matches (professional and family games ) were depicted by an all-white arrangement within a circle of willow and upward -sweeping pussy willow.
White gerbera (the crowd) snapdragons (wickets) lilies (umpire and players) and roses (ladies in the crowd) were used to good effect.
Memories of mouth-watering knickerbocker glories in ice cream parlours was cleverly created in a tall martini-shaped glass, using flowers and colour to suggest lemons (snapdragons), peaches (roses), whipped cream (carnations), raspberry sauce (red trailing amaranthus), firm grasses placed at an angle were the straws.
The finale was the memory of a birthday treat at the Ritz in London.
The famous urn of flowers was created with palms, peacock feathers, roses, lilies and peonies giving an oppulent design in pinks. A window box made a matching addition.
Lorena provided a lovely evening. Mrs Cynthia Slade gave a very complimentary vote of thanks.
