STEVEN Pearce says he is in the shape of his life as he prepares to defend his BBBoC Midland Area Welterweight against fellow Stourbridge fighter Sam Egginton at The Venue in Dudley tomorrow.

Pearce won the title with a fifth round stoppage of Luke Gallear in March and is now ready for the much-awaited bout with his friend and rival.

He said: “I’m feeling in the shape of my life,” Pearce said. “I feel sharp and fit. My diet is spot-on and because I’ve had a full training camp I’ve been able to just drop a pound a week, so physically I’m 100 per cent.

“This is my belt. I’m the champion and that’s how I want things to stay. “I know it wil be a tough fight but I’m prepared for that. I’m ready. I hope Sam is.”

Eggington, meanwhile, believes top class sparring will prove key in his efforts to dethrone Pearce.

Nineteen-year-old Eggington has enjoyed sparring sessions with the likes of British champion Frankie Gavin and former English light-welterweight champion Curtis Woodhouse as he attempts to become one of the youngest ever area champions.

“Sparring the likes of Frankie and Curtis is ideal preparation,” he said. “They’ re both great fighters and in Frankie Gavin you can’t get better sparring for a Midlands title than the current British champion at your weight.

“To spar with those two, plus the likes of Dave Egan who is a warrior, has been great. I’m feeling really good.

“It’s a massive night for me and a massive night for Black Country boxing. There will be a big crowd there and we both really want it. “This is his first defence since winning the belt in March and this is my first title shot as a pro.”

Tickets are priced at £30 unreserved seating and there are still a handful of VIP tables, priced at £60 (Ringside) to include a three-course meal (tables of 10). They are available from The Venue box office on 01384 453 101.
