National Theatre (NT) Live is a wonderfully inclusive way to experience the company’s awe-inspiring productions from your very own doorstep, and no more fitting production could be distributed to the masses than Prima Facie.
Now being broadcast in cinemas across the country for its second round of screenings, I visited Showcase Cinema in Dudley to rewatch this masterpiece for a second time.
Playwright, Suzie Miller’s, heartfelt drama delivers a strong message, deservedly shedding light on an overlooked matter, partially stemming from her own experience as a barrister.
Set in the Chambers of a London based Court, the play tells the story of a defence barrister’s (Tessa) changed views on the legal system’s shady loopholes surrounding sexual assault cases when she experiences sexual assault herself.
The show utilises all aspects of theatrics phenomenally, from the minimalistic, multi-purpose, moving set to the contrasting levels and on-stage rain.
Combined with a feisty, comedic and almost camp lead character, it creates an atmosphere that an audience can instantly warm and relate to, making the play ever more moving.
This solo play was conducted by Emmy award winning actress Jodie Comer, who’s phenomenal performance commanded the stage, managing to transcend the barriers of both stage and screen.
Her thought-provoking monologues and staggering physical performance would struggle to leave any audience member dry eyed.
A show that could not help but resonate with each viewer with a gut-wrenching ending that was somehow both beautiful and horrible.
Most importantly, this play is an inspiring push to illicit change and serve justice to real world victims of sexual assault and a highly recommended watch.
Catch this phenomenal play at cinema screenings across the country running until December through National Theatre Live.
